Microblading vs SPMU
Semi permanent makeup, also know as micro pigmentation is used to implant pigments into the skin at the dermal layer. Most popular at present is the Brow procedure closely followed by the Lip Liner or Blush. The finished results not only look amazing but they are a game changer for the super busy ladies that struggle every morning, applying their pencil brows. There is always one brow you just can’t master and this is one of the main reasons that this procedure is now so popular. A good brow shape can give you so much confidence, not to mention the impact a great shape can have. As the brows frame the eyes some would say they can actually make you look younger due to the lifted effect they can have to the eye area.
So you have decided to take the plunge and book an appointment but what method are you going to have Microblading or SPMU. Do you know the difference?. There is a misconception that Microblading isn’t a tattoo. It is, just a different application to implant the pigment. Below I discuss briefly the differences between the two methods to help you decide which would be right for you. This is only a guide for information purpose, you will need to book an appointment for a consultation. Your practitioner (hopefully you choose me) will advise you of the best possible outcomes and recommend a procedure that will produce the best results. Everyone is different and there are lost of factors to consider when deciding on the best method to implant the pigment, not all people are good candidates for microblading.
The technique for Microblading, as this is a manual method of implanting pigment using a hand tool application gliding a row of fine needles across the skin in straight or curved lines, which break the superficial layers of the skin to implant the pigment.
The technique for SPMU this is a machine application known as tattooing. A variable oscillating needle head that controls either a single or multi configuration of needles to puncture the skin to implant the pigment.
Microblading is most commonly used to create hair strokes, although you can also produce shading that creates a powder brow using the hand tool. They are best used to fill in gaps or to create fullness to a sparse brow. This method is more superficial and will usually only last about 8-18 months due to the shallow depth of application. The brows will require reapplication more frequently in order to keep the shape, fullness and colour fresh. The procedure is done in 2 sittings, 8-12 weeks apart. This method is not recommended for all skin types. Microblading is suitable for young, healthy skins with no under lying skin complaints. Also not recommended for Fitzpatrick skin type 1 due to the thinness of skin and the sensitivity of this skin type. Mature and oily skin types will not hold the pigment. The crisp hair strokes will also tend to blur, throw off or become very cool during healing.
The Machine can also be used to create hair strokes but most commonly used for shading producing the powder, ombre and combination brow. They will last longer due to the depth of application which is deeper than the Microblading. The Machine creates the look most people associate with semi permanent makeup treatment. They also require two sittings to achieve best results, again 8-12 weeks apart, however Machine brows can last up to 5 years, longer in some cases. Colour boosts/refresh treatments are required every 12-24 months to keep your colour fresh. The colour can be implanted in a very soft natural look or heavier to create a more dramatic look. This method is suitable for most skin types, however excessively oily skin types may still have problems retaining the pigment so the end results maybe disappointing.
