The image above whilst it is horrific, it is an example of what can happen if you don't have a patch test. Patch tests are not just limited to eyebrow or eyelash treatments. You will be required to have patch tests for numerous other hair and beauty treatments. Below I have list some of the most frequently asked questions regarding Patch Tests.
Q. What is a Skin Patch Testing?
A. Its a procedure that exposes an area of skin to a small amount of a product, usually applied behind the ear or in the crease of the elbow.
Q. Why is a Skin Patch Test Necessary?
A. This will determine if you are likely to develop an allergic reaction or preventing an inflammatory skin complaint occurring. Whilst this most reactions can be mild they are still uncomfortable and can take time to resolve. There is also the possibility of a severe allergic reaction occurring which can result in the airways closing over, resulting in the need for urgent medical attention.
Q. How Long Do You Wait After a Test?
A. There is usually a period of 24hrs to determine if a reaction/allergy is likely. However this will be dependant on the manufactures guide lines as some brands or insurance companies will require 48hrs period.
Q. What Does a Reaction Look Like?
A. Common symptoms are localised reddening, itchiness, tingling and mild inflammation. Severe reactions can include, burning, stinging, blistering, sweeping and severe inflammation to exposed areas of the skin.
Q. What Should You Do if a Reaction Occurs
A. You should notify the manager/staff at the salon immediately, it is important that this is documented in the Accident Book. They will advise what you need to do. In the event of a severe reaction you should contact your GP immediately.
I hope this helps you to understand why you must comply with the salon's request for you to have a patch test. Remember they are there to help you and keep you safe.
Take care.
